Ramadan: Nigerian Students

share

Assalamualaikum. I hope we’re having a beautiful month thus far. Life on campus is hard, and it is especially harder when you’re fasting, and getting ready for tests or exams. Deciding what to cook, and even having the energy for it is not an easy feat. Last night, I was so close to eating bread for iftar and calling it a day. I’m sure there are many others like me, who find it very hard to decide what to do most of the time.

It’s a time for spiritual growth, reflection, and of course, delicious Iftar meals. But let’s be honest, juggling uni work, exams, and social life can be stressful, leaving little time for elaborate cooking.  Here are some easy, budget-friendly Iftar recipes you can whip up in your dorm room or shared apartment, all while keeping up with your studies.

Quick & Nutritious Suhoor Ideas:

Oatmeal Powerhouse: Whip up a bowl of oatmeal with chopped nuts, dried fruits, and a drizzle of honey for sustained energy throughout the day.

Eggcellent Start: Scrambled eggs with chopped vegetables and wholewheat toast are a protein-packed option that takes minutes to prepare.

Fruity Yogurt Delight: Layer yogurt with granola and fresh fruits for a refreshing and healthy pre-dawn meal.

Simple Iftar Wins:

Classic Bean Sambo: This Nigerian staple is a lifesaver. Canned beans mashed with pepper, onions, and spices, served with Agege bread, is filling and requires minimal prep.

Speedy Spaghetti Surprise: Cook a pot of spaghetti and toss it with your favorite tomato sauce, vegetables, and leftover grilled chicken (if you have some) for a quick and satisfying meal.

One-Pot Wonder: Combine rice, vegetables, protein like chicken or lentils, and your favorite spices in a single pot for a fuss-free and flavorful dish.

Budget-Friendly Tips:

Plan Your Meals: Dedicate some time each week to plan your Iftar meals. This helps you avoid last-minute grocery runs and impulse buys.

Shop Smart: Buy in bulk for staples like rice, pasta, and beans. Look for deals and discounts on ingredients. Don’t be afraid to explore local markets for fresh produce at affordable prices.

Leftovers are Your Friend: Cook larger portions and enjoy leftovers for Suhoor or the next Iftar.

Team Up! Share cooking duties with roommates or friends. This saves time, money, and creates a fun communal experience.

Managing the Juggle:

Utilise Technology: Many online platforms offer Ramadan meal plans and quick recipe ideas specifically for students.

Prep in Advance: Chopping vegetables, marinating meats, or pre-cooking grains on your free days saves precious time during Iftar prep.

Multitasking Magic: Listen to lectures or catch up on coursework while waiting for food to cook.

Remember:

Iftar doesn’t have to be a complex affair. Simple, nutritious meals can be just as delicious and fulfilling. Focus on enjoying the company of loved ones (even if it’s your roommate!), reflecting on your spiritual journey, and breaking your fast with gratitude.

Bonus Tip:  Don’t be afraid to get creative! Experiment with different flavors and ingredients to find meals that suit your taste buds and budget.

Ramadan Mubarak. May this Ramadan be filled with blessings, delicious food, and academic success.

Paysabil.
